Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam beach is a beach in Varkala, along the Arabian Sea, part of the Indian Ocean. The word Papanasam means wash away sins. It is believed that a dip in the waters of Papanasam Beach washes away all the sins in one’s life.
Sivagiri is a pilgrimage centre in Varkala, India where one of its social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru’s tomb is located and place where guru was enlightened and got the salvation. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days 30 December to 1 January.
Janardhana Swamy Temple
Janardana Swami Temple is a 2000 year old temple situated in Varkala. It is also known as Varkala Temple. Janardana Swami is a form of Lord Vishnu. It is a very well known temple in Kerala . It is situated near the Arabian sea shore.It is referred to as Dakshin Kashi.
Anjengo Fort is lying on the seacoast is Anjengo or Anjuthengu, meaning five coconut trees. A place of historic importance as well as beautiful natural setting, Anjengo is an ideal destination for those who don’t mind walking around and explore what is in store.
Efficient, government run, air conditioned, low floored buses run from Stand 19 at Trivandrum’s brand new (2014) bus terminal opposite the train station. Services supposedly run every hour, although this report is unconfirmed, Bus services are also available from Varkala to many parts of South Kerala and Kanyakumari
Nearest airports : Trivandrum International Airport (50km, 1hr 15 min drive).
Nearest Railheads: Varkala is also connected by Rail Network. If coming from Trivandrum and Cochin, Almost all trains passing by call at Varkala Station. From Varkala Railway Station, taxis and auto rickshaws can be hired. Papanasam Beach is around 5km from Varkala Railway Station.
