The months between November and February are perfect to visit Kerala. Expect moderate temperatures and lush green estates. Of course these are peak months, so expected higher rates and crowds at popular places.July and August are popular with tourists too as this is peak monsoon season.
1.Chalakkudi- Athirapilly- Valparayi
Chalakkudy – Valparai -Pollachi is a beautiful route along the western ghat forests.
There are a number of interesting places along the road from Chalakkudy to Athirippilly waterfalls.Dream world water theme park, Silver storm water theme park are located on this road.
Another interesting tourist place is the thumboormuzhi river garden located about 16KM from Chalakkudy. This is a good place to spent time and has toilet facilities and children’s park.
There are a number of resorts around this place.
The route from Athirippilly to Vazhachal is through the forest and somewhere in the middle is the beautiful Charpa falls.There is also a large population of monkeys around this place.
The water droplets from the falls will shower your face as you drive along the road.
Around 32KM from Vazhachal check post) we reached the Sholayar lake situated in Kerala.You get an entirely different experience from peringalkuthu lake since now you are at a vantage point giving you a bird’s eye view of the entire area. Malakkappara is full of tea plantations and it is a treat to the eye. Tamilnadu check post in Malakkappara is located around 2KM from the Kerala check post.
The road from Valparai to Pollachi goes through it and if you are alert along your drive, you are sure to sight a lot of animals/birds. The road is well maintained by Tamilnadu government and there are 40 hairpin bends on this road.
The roads were so good, twisting and turning and the traffic was also less. Malankara dam is hardly 1km off the main road Thodupuzha. The place was calm and is a nice spot for a small break and a few snaps.Muttom – Erattupetta road. This road was not so good compared to the road till Muttom, but still was not so bad too. The drive is normal as the roads were good and there were no difficult hair pins bends on this route except for some twists and turns here and there.
Note :Anyone visiting Wagamon by private vehicle, please ensure that you have more than enough fuel before you start, or please fill it before Erattupetta itself.
3.Kochi- Munnar- Devikulam
Cochin to Munnar is one of the most beautiful and scenic road trips .The whole drive from Cochin to Munnar is marked with some remarkable views of the mountains and the valleys.
There is a spice garden on way from cochin to munnar.Spice garden had plants and trees of almost all spices known in India. Also, it had different plants of medicinal and herbal value.Cochin to munnar will take approximately 4hours.
Devikulam is about 7km from Munnar in the Idukki district. Nature lovers are here for a treat as they can admire and study divergent flora and fauna.Devikulam is a trekker’s delight and an excursion through plantations and red gum trees would truly vouch for an enchanting experience.
One should surely not miss a guided plantation tour to know more about the flora and fauna of Devikulam.One can plan a trip covering Devikulam as well as Munnar which is very close by.
Devikulam is easily accessible by road from both Kochi and Kottayam and the road trip is a pleasing experience to nature lovers. Road options include both State Transport Buses and private buses. The route to Devikulam is full of breathtaking sceneries and steep slopes. Tickets are cheap; buses can be crowded though.
4. Kochi- Kuttikanam- Thekkady
Kuttikanam near Peermedu in Idukki is a place for adventure tourism and trekking .The best time to visit here are the months of April and May. The place is enriched with greenish tea, misty hills, cardamom estates, variety of green woods, beautiful waterfalls and chill weather with refreshing winds. about 1 km from Kuttikanam, Parunthupara or Grampi is a rock sculpture near the hill station.
Thekkady from Kochi is one of the most beautiful ones. Though there are few different routes. At Thekkady, there are lot of activities to be done like Forest Trekking, Lake Cruise, Jeep Safari, Bullock Cart rides, Tiger Trail, Bamboo rafting, Elephant Rides.
5. Munnar – Thekkady
Munnar is undoubtedly the most visited tourist destination in Kerala. And Thekkady is not far behind.The entire route is of high terrains with mountains, hills, tea plantations and cardamom estates. A good number of visitors to Munnar visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady.
The distance between Munnar and Thekkady is about 85 to 90 km.The roads are very narrow and broken in some places especially during monsoon. From Munnar to Thekkady is about 3 hours. If you are driving yourself, drive slow and carefully.
Most beautiful and scenic route:The most scenic and beautiful route is Munnar-Devikulam- Pooppara-Udumbanchola-Thekkady. This route is about 100 km but the amazing scenic beauty along the route is worth the extra drive.
Fastest route:The fastest route is, Munnar – Chithirapuram – Anachal – Rajakkad – Karithode – Nedumkandam – Thekkady.
